History of Esports Leagues and Tournaments in Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the world’s fastest-growing esports communities. Because of this, it is now the desired destination for sports tournaments in Southeast Asia. Below are some of the most famous events that have been held in Malaysia over the past few years.
Kuala Lumpur Major
The Kuala Lumpur Major was founded in 2018 and is one of the highlights of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit. It is the largest event of its kind in Malaysia and has a total prize pool of USD 1,000,000 (RM 4.18 million). Virtus Pro from Russia won the first KL Major and beat Team Secret in the best match of the big five finals.
Malaysian Cyber Games
After a few years in the wilderness, Malaysian cyber gaming returned in January 2018 with eight different events over two days. These tournaments cover a wide range of titles, from eSports classics (Dota 2, CS: GO) to traditional fighters (Street Fighter V, Tekken) to virtual sports and competitions (FIFA 18, F1 2017).
SEA Tour
The SEA Tour, previously known as Garena Premier League, is a League of Legends competition involving teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The master team represents the region at major events such as the Mid-Season Invitational, Rift Rivals, and LoL World Championship.
